Bennett + Bennett were appointed as part of the construction team to provide model management for the $190 million purpose-built maintenance facility at Wulkuraka. Ipswich has long been recognised as one of the original hubs of the rail industry within Australia. Now it is home to a new state-of-the-art maintenance facility, purpose built to maintain 75 six-car trains purchased to cater for the increase in passenger services required throughout South East Queensland. The construction site was narrow and covered an approximate area of 11 hectares which included large workshop facilities, multiple rail tracks, roads, in-ground services, other buildings and security networks. The combination of a congested and narrow construction site required efficient schedule management to optimise the construction process. A BIM approach identified issues before they had the opportunity to arise. Bennett + Bennett’s model management service was a key factor in ensuring the project’s success. Designs from five different sources were checked for location accuracy, clash reviews, compared with the constructability schedule and updated in a change register. The model management service interfaced with the package leaders, schedule co-coordinators and construction teams from both Laing O’Rourke and outsourced contractors.
