A new 6,000m² expansion transitioned Burpengary Plaza from a neighbourhood centre to a regional shopping centre. Approval of a major expansion for the Burpengary Plaza Shopping Centre followed a lengthy and complicated planning process including establishing an appropriate planning strategy to advance a dated approval issued by the Planning and Environment Court, and extensive negotiations with Local and State Government to achieve an appropriate outcome. The project represents a significant redevelopment and extension of the dated shopping centre to create a well-designed, viable and pedestrian friendly retail centre for Burpengary. The redevelopment comprises approximately 6,000m² of additional retail space, a new shopping mall and public plaza area, as well as accommodating the existing bus transit network. Retail components included a new discount department store, additional independent retail tenancies, restaurants and an auto service centre. The proposal represented an excellent example of refurbishing a dated retail centre into a contemporary and pedestrian-friendly centre to service the local community, whilst accommodating Council’s long-term strategic vision for the creation of an urban ‘main street’ fronting the centre.
