The Ellie Project: A Haven for Brave Young Fighters

Last Friday, a remarkable chapter in Ellie’s journey and her community’s story unfolded with the official opening of Ellie’s Playground. Located at the Jenny Black Cancer Wellness Centre in partnership with Hope Horizons, this extraordinary playground is more than a space for play—it’s a lifeline for children like Ellie who face unique challenges in their daily lives.

Ellie’s story has touched hearts across Toowoomba and beyond. At just four years old, Ellie has bravely battled cancer for 824 days. Through The Ellie Project, her journey has become a source of strength and inspiration for many. While Ellie completed her chemotherapy on April 30, 2023, her immune system remains compromised, limiting her access to typical playgrounds that can be unsafe and unsanitary for children in similar conditions.

The Ellie Project identified a critical need: creating a safe, inclusive, and sterile environment where children like Ellie can simply be kids again. Ellie’s Playground is designed with their needs in mind. This state-of-the-art facility ensures a clean, secure space for immune-compromised children, featuring carefully chosen materials and designs that promote hygiene and accessibility.

“The Ellie Project is a shining example of how communities can come together to create meaningful change,” said Matt Strahley, Partner and Major Projects Capability Manager at Bennett + Bennett. “Being involved in such a thoughtful initiative has been a privilege, and it’s heartening to see the impact it will have on families in the region.”

The playground will provide a safe and enjoyable space for Ellie and other children with similar challenges to play freely. It’s also a place for siblings to bond and spend time together in a supportive environment. For families navigating childhood cancer, this playground offers a small but meaningful sense of normalcy in their lives.
