2022 was a massive year for Bennett + Bennett, where we saw record growth in our team and capability. Our Site Map team is constantly exploring the latest advancements in geospatial technology, and our new investments bring exciting new service offerings. Here’s a broad overview showing some of our new tech!

Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) – Rigel VMQ

Our new RIEGL VMQ system dramatically improves our Mobile Laser Scanning service offering. MLS involves a vehicle-mounted LiDAR sensor that maps in 3D all elements within range and line of site of the vehicle during passes from both directions. The LiDAR is positioned using Post Processed Kinematic (PPK) GNSS, an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), Distance. Measurement. Indicator (DMI), and fixed to local ground control points. This enables an accurate 3D point cloud to be prepared directly in relation to the site survey control. Panoramic imagery is captured along the routes simultaneous to the LiDAR and is used to colourise the point cloud or can be viewed on its own.

RIEGL offer industry leading LiDAR solutions and have been the long standing benchmark in MLS. This system is extremely effective in capturing geospatial data however the downstream opportunities of this data are endless. Some of the deliverables include:

  • Survey Grade Detail Surveys
  • Scan to BIM
  • Corridor Mapping
  • Visualisation and Imagery hosting
  • 3D Clash detection

Indoor Mobile Mapping – NavVis VLX

Our new NavVis VLX system has enabled our Surveyors to map buildings and structures with unrivalled efficiency while producing point clouds at accuracies comparable to static TLS. The VLX continuously maps while walking using a technology called Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) which improves the point cloud coverage and minimises shadowing. Many SLAM solutions produce very low-quality point clouds and not related survey control however the VLX sits on another level above all other SLAM systems. The imagery also provides exceptional point cloud colour and panoramic imagery.

It is not just about the hardware! We are using cloud processing to enable point clouds to be processed and hosted online the next day! Our Ivion portal enables both the point cloud and imagery to be interrogated through your web browser, has some great functionality and is super intuitive.

Helicopter LiDAR – Riegl VUX

Our new Helicopter LiDAR integration enables us to capture ultra high resolution LiDAR and imagery with the ultimate flexibility. This is essentially a helicopter Aerial Laser Scanning (ALS) solution. We can fly low, follow exact corridors and hover over detailed areas of interest without the same hurdles associated with drones.

This is a custom integration built by our team to fill a gap between what we can capture with a drone and the broad scale aerial LiDAR.

The results we are getting were beyond our initial expectations and this system is a game changer for aerial surveying!

In addition to the new hardware, we have gained further expertise and software capabilities to model the best possible ground surface from the ALS. Our processes are now more streamlined and producing better results than ever. Below is a sample of a bare earth model extracted from the VMQ in a heavily vegetated area.

2023 and beyond!

Over the coming weeks, we will showcase more of this technology and case studies. We are only scratching the surface of some of the capabilities. There have also been significant advances in our standard Terrestrial Laser Scanning and, perhaps more significantly, our Geospatial Digital Engineering, which you will hear more about very soon!
