Function Centre Re-Use Of Former Church
Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley
Client: Brisbane Modern Art
Year Completed: 2015
Bennett + Bennett Town Planning prepared and coordinated the development application seeking approval for the adaptive re-use of the existing heritage building to establish a versatile space which could operate as a restaurant, function facility, shop and/or office.
The building was constructed in 1876 and has been used for many purposes, including a place of worship and later an art gallery. The proposal retained the former church building and the existing terrace area surrounding the former church. New kitchen facilities and amenities were added as a part of the proposed development.
The application process included coordinating with Council and the State Government in relation to planning and heritage matters. The application was approved in April 2015, and subsequently opened as the High Church, hosting many successful functions and events. This project was an excellent example of adaptive re-use of a heritage building which celebrates and embraces the diverse history and architecture of the former church.
