Highlight Project: Sundale Bridge
Location: Main Beach – Gold Coast | Completed: 2018 | Award: Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards – Technical Excellence
The 375 metre long Sundale Bridge is located on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Officially known as the Gold Coast Bridge, but locally referred to as the Sundale Bridge due to its proximity to the site of the former Sundale Shopping Centre, the bridge spans the Nerang River linking the suburbs of Southport and Main Beach. Originally opened in 1966, the bridge’s current four lane dual carriageway has over time become a bottle neck in and out of the forever growing Surfers Paradise. Plans to add an additional lane were proposed but an investigation was required to understand if this was feasible.
Bennett + Bennett were tasked at providing a spatial survey solution that provided comprehensive data capture, achieving excellent horizontal and vertical precision. An innovative data capture method was required on the bridge structure to accurately measure features that were only visible from the water. The survey deliverables were to be utilised with high confidence levels for engineering design and in the development of a full 3D BIM model as well as conforming to the City of Gold Coast (CoGC) Survey requirements. The high accuracy solution was to assist Council, Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Engineer Consultant in their design assessment of bridge structure and proposed adjacent road upgrades.
Further to this the entire 160,000 square metre project area required substantial surface and sub-surface survey information. Spatial data management services were required to compile GIS and survey information to conform to CoGC survey requirements and also to produce reliable 3D data in a BIM enabled format as per the project strategy.
To assist with the stakeholder engagement, Bennett + Bennett created a photorealistic reality model surrounding the entire precent to be used for the project visualisations.
“The most significant benefit to the project has been the ability of our engineers to accurately analyse, design and retrofit an iconic and culturally significant bridge on the Gold Coast. The accuracy of the 3D laser Survey and Bridge Models have directly saved the project approximately $15M (33% of the Cap Cost of the project). This saving is a direct benefit to the CoGC Community.”
“The CoGC have experimented with 3D Laser Survey methodologies and run a few small Digital Engineering Pilot projects. The Sundale Bridge project, represents the first full 3D laser survey and BIM enabled project. This new delivery methodology, which is only at Concept Stage, has already reduced the traditional Survey and Engineering Design costs by 40%. It has established a new benchmark for Survey for the City and has begun a large internal conversation within the City to transform our engineering process from an analogue process to a digital engineering process.”
